Out of the Office: The Benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy in Denver

There's a moment that happens in a lot of therapy sessions. You're sitting across from your therapist, the clock is ticking, and something about the formality of it all makes the very thing you came to talk about feel harder to access. You know it's there. You just can't quite get to it.

If that sounds familiar, walk and talk therapy might be worth considering.

What Is Walk and Talk Therapy?

Walk and talk therapy is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of sitting face to face in an office, you and your therapist meet outside and do the work of therapy while walking side by side on a trail. The conversation is the same. The goals are the same. The setting is just a little more like real life.

It's not a new idea, but it's one that's gaining well deserved attention as more therapists and clients discover what can happen when you take healing outside.

Why Nature Changes the Experience

There's something that happens when you step outside. The nervous system settles. Eye contact becomes optional. The mind opens up in ways it often can't inside a traditional office.

Research backs up what many of us feel instinctively. Time in nature reduces cortisol, lowers anxiety, and promotes a sense of calm and clarity. Walking itself boosts mood, increases creative thinking, and helps the brain process difficult emotions more fluidly. When therapeutic conversation happens in this environment, clients often find it easier to say the thing they came to say.

The side by side dynamic matters too. Walking next to someone rather than sitting across from them shifts the relational quality of the conversation. It feels less like an evaluation and more like a collaboration. For clients who find direct eye contact uncomfortable, or who feel self conscious in a clinical setting, this can make all the difference.

Who It Tends to Work Well For

Walk and talk therapy isn't for everyone, and that's okay. But it tends to resonate with clients who:

  • Feel restless or closed off in a traditional office setting

  • Find it easier to open up when they're moving

  • Already turn to nature or physical activity when they need to decompress

  • Are working through anxiety, stress, grief, or life transitions

  • Simply want therapy to feel a little less clinical and a little more human

What I Offer

Based in Denver, I offer walk and talk therapy sessions, from accessible city routes to more immersive mountain settings, depending on what feels right for you.

For clients who want something close to home, Denver offers plenty of beautiful, accessible options. Sloan’s Lake, Washington Park, and Chatfield State Park are a few favorites that offer enough natural surroundings to feel restorative without requiring a long drive. For clients who want to go a little further into nature, I also offer sessions in and around Golden and Boulder.

You don't have to be an experienced hiker. If you can walk and have a conversation, you can do this. We'll always choose a trail that fits your pace, your hiking experience, and what you're up for that day.

How It Works

Walk and talk sessions are available after we've had a chance to meet, establish a therapeutic relationship, and set your goals together. Once we have that foundation, heading outside becomes one more tool available to us as we work.
